CNN —Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he “cannot accept” Hamas’ demands to end the war in Gaza as the two sides traded blame amid fresh ceasefire talks that showed little sign of a breakthrough. But the latest comments from Israel and Hamas show how far apart the two remain. He said Hamas’s demand that Israel withdraw from Gaza was out of the question. Most recently, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held another round of high-stakes talks in Israel on Wednesday. Following the rocket barrage, Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) blamed Hamas aid not reaching the besieged strip.

Jerusalem CNN —An Israeli man was seriously wounded and two girls were hurt in a shooting in the West Bank, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israeli emergency services said Sunday. The shooting took place in the Israeli-occupied southern West Bank, which is normally calmer than the north. Palestinian sources said Israeli troops were searching every car as they looked for the suspects, creating a traffic jam lasting at least two hours on a day when Israel and the West Bank are suffering a heatwave. Most of the recent violence in the West Bank has taken place in the region’s north, especially in Jenin and Nablus. Both those cities have seen Israel carry out deadly anti-terror raids and Palestinian militants attacking civilians, sometimes in response to the IDF operations.

My daughter, Luna, was 1 month old when she died last year as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident. It doesn’t matter if your child is 35 years old or 1 month old: Losing them shreds the entire fabric of your reality. The devastating loss and emptiness you are left holding becomes the new foundation that you unwillingly and without choice must rebuild your life upon. Jeffrey PassowIndianapolisTo the Editor:Sarah Wildman’s wrenching essay about life after the death of her adolescent daughter Orli gives language to the raw agony of one’s child dying. I, too, found that I needed to direct my pain to bring some good to this world, to help our daughter Liza’s death have meaning.
